SANTA FE, N.M. – Joseph Daniel McDonald is not
a typical soul-seeker. He explains, “I eat meat,
prefer a good party to group meditation, and suffer
from an array of personal defects.” But his lower
nature has never diminished his passionate desire to
find God. For McDonald, the road to enlightenment has
been more like a rollercoaster than a breezy trip to
bliss. He describes his new book, If a Fool Like Dan
Can Be Enlightened, So Can You! (available through
AuthorHouse), as “a very real, down-and dirty,
lusty life chronicle”, in which he battles addictions
and ego. He considers his book to be more like an “Indiana
Jones and the Temple of Dharma” adventure, rather
than a typical new age book such as Chicken Soup for
the Soul.
McDonald refers to himself as “the bad boy
of enlightenment” and leads the reader through
some of the darker moments of his life, including
a suicide attempt, encounters with natural disasters,
and two near-death experiences. Ironically, these
catastrophic events seem to push him toward his ultimate
goal of self-realization. With humor and warmth, the
author recounts an uncommon journey dotted across
our globe from wild times in San Francisco to the
distant mountains of the Himalayas. Other places featured
in the book are Indiana, Great Britain, New York,
Chicago, and Santa Fe New Mexico. Learning from great
masters throughout his life, McDonald encapsulates
difficult Eastern philosophies and
Americanizes them for the reader. McDonald explains
to the reader that it is every human being’s birthright
to become self-realized and that meditation is their
ticket to truth.
In this fully illustrated children’s book for
adults, McDonald teaches his readers about being human,
about being humble, and about learning the greatest
lesson of all: how to love. This is a story of triumph
and of overcoming exceptional obstacles. McDonald promises
his readers that they will discover “miracles
beyond your wildest comprehension” in this gem
of a book, and invites them to “Please fasten
your seatbelts, you’re in for an enlightening
and magical ride!”
McDonald currently lives in Santa Fe, N.M. with his
loyal canine companion, Ganesha, and is currently working
on his second book. For more information about If a
